Part-time certificates are valid for five years and can be renewed with an application and $75 fee (money order or credit card) by one of the methods listed below:
- Three (3) semester hours of college credit in an area in which you are certified or seeking certification or Adult Education, ESOL, Exceptional Student Education, Foreign Language or Technology (computer related).
- Sixty (60) inservice points in an approved Florida master inservice program.
- A passing numerical score on the Florida subject area test specific to the coverage to be renewed is equivalent to three (3) semester hours of college credit for renewal purposes.
- A valid certificate issued by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards will renew the certificate only in the subject(s) shown on the national certificate.
- Teaching a college level course at an acceptable institution may be accepted the same as credit earned for that course.
Courses acceptable for renewal:
- A course in an area in which you certified or seeking certification.
- Any Exceptional Student Education course.
- A professional development course such as substance abuse, self-esteem, child abuse, etc.
- A foreign language course.
Teaching Part-time Academic
- If you are considering working part-time for the School Board, determine whether there are job opportunities for part-time teaching in your vocational area by reviewing the instructional vacancies posted through career services.
- You will have to document six (6) years full-time experience performing the skills and activities of the occupation. If you have an associate or higher degree or 60 semester hours of college credit in the occupation, or completed a Department of Labor apprenticeship program, or earned a valid certificate, registration, or license issued by a recognized state or national credentialing agency in the work field specific to the area of certification, you need to document two (2) years full-time experience. You must document at least one (1) year full-time experience working in the trade during the last five (5) years (recency). You must be a high school or GED graduate.
- To apply send a completed application for a Broward County Educator’s Certificate, confirmation of your $75 fee paid online via credit card, Verification of Occupational Experience, and a copy of your high school diploma, college coursework, and/or technical training certificate to the Talent Acquisition and Operations - Certification Department.
- NOTE: A Broward Certificate is not issued unless you are employed by the School Board. If employed, you should receive your certificate in approximately eight weeks providing you have included all required documentation.

Teaching Part-time/Full-time Vocational Education
- Examine the list of VOCATIONAL CERTIFICATION COVERAGESto determine if your trade or occupation is listed.
- Document six (6) years of full-time (40 hours a week) experience performing the skills and activities of that occupation with at least one (1) year of full-time experience working in the trade during the last five (5) years (Recency). Submit an Employment Verification of Occupational Experience Form to each employer for whom you have worked. Self-employment or experience in a family owned business must be verified by the accountant or attorney of record verifying the type of business and the services provided by the business. Verification forms must be notarized.
- Provide verification that you are a high school or GED graduate.
- Send a completed application for a Broward County Educator’s Certificate, $75 fee (payable through this site via credit card) and OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS for any college credits or degrees you have completed, and copies of any valid licenses or applicable certificates for your trade.
- Call 754-321-2348 if you need additional information pertaining to the requirements for a specific trade or occupation.
- Initial full-time Broward vocational certificates are temporary, are valid for three years, and require completion of the ACTIVE program. Contact the CTACE Department for information on requirements for full-time vocational teachers. Successful completion of all requirements will allow for application of the professional certificate.
Renewals of Broward certificates:
- Professional full-time Broward vocational certificates are valid for five years and can be renewed by sending a completed application for a Broward County Educator’s Certificate, confirmation of your $75 fee paid online via credit card, and by completing six (6) semester hours of college credit and/or 120 inservice points within the validity period of the certificate.
- Part-time vocational applications are valid for five years and can be renewed by sending a completed application for a Broward County Educator’s Certificate, confirmation of your $75 fee paid online via credit card, and any valid licenses, if applicable. No coursework or inservice is required.
- Certificates will be mailed in approximately eight weeks providing you include all required documentation.
Below are general guidelines for determining appropriate work experience:
- Experience is calculated as a 40 hour week. One year is equivalent to 2000 hours.
- Experience must have been in the "competitive workplace", using the skills of the trade. Teaching experience will NOT be accepted as work experience.
- You must document "Recency" in the trade or occupation with at least one (1) year full-time experience working in the trade during the last five (5) years. Teaching experience in the area may be used to meet this requirement.
Special Expertise
- The following groups must hold a valid license from the FL Department of Health (DOH) for employment:
Audiologists, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapy assistant

- A valid license or certificate must be kept on file with the Certification Department for continued employment.
- A district issued certificate is not required for these positions.

- You must apply directly to the Florida Department of Education.
- You must pay the associated fee through the district.

Professional Certificate Renewals
Late Application Fee
A late fee of $30 is required if the application is submitted for renewal of your Professional Certificate after it has expired. To utilize the late renewal option, all requirements for renewal of the certificate must have been completed prior to expiration of the certificate except for submitting the application and fee. The $30 late fee is in addition to your $75 fee for a total of $105.

This application is only for those renewing their state-issued (Florida) professional certificates.

RENEWAL PROCESS FOR THOSE NOT CURRENTLY EMPLOYED BY BCPS
Apply directly to the Florida Department of Education for your renewal. If you would like to use points earned from BCPS to renew your professional certificate, please send an email request with your name and personnel number to Certification Requests and the verification of inservice points will be sent to the State for you.
